Dosha

What is Dosha?

Also known as: Tridosha · Vata Pitta Kapha

Definition

Doshas are the three functional energies of Ayurveda — Vata, Pitta and Kapha — whose balance is believed to govern every process in the body and mind.

Vata governs movement, Pitta governs transformation and heat, and Kapha governs structure and stability. Everyone has all three, in a personal proportion fixed at birth (prakriti).

Health, in Ayurveda, is the doshas staying close to that natural balance. Diet, season, age, routine and stress can push one or more out of balance, and much of Ayurvedic advice is about gently bringing them back.

In Ayurvedic diabetes care

Identifying which dosha is dominant helps an Ayurvedic physician personalise food, routine and activity advice. In metabolic imbalance, Kapha usually receives particular attention.

Frequently asked questions

Which dosha is linked with diabetes in Ayurveda?

Classical texts describe most types of Prameha as Kapha-related, though Pitta and Vata are also involved, especially as the condition becomes long-standing.

Can I find my dosha with an online quiz?

Quizzes give a rough idea, but a physician's assessment of your constitution and current imbalance is more reliable, and it matters if you are managing a health condition.
