Dosha

What is Vata?

Also known as: Vata dosha

Definition

Vata is the Ayurvedic dosha of movement, made of air and space, that governs breathing, circulation, nerve impulses and elimination.

Vata is described as dry, light, cold, rough and mobile. In balance it supports creativity, flexibility and clear communication; out of balance it is associated with dryness, restlessness, poor sleep and irregular digestion.

Ayurveda links Vata more with the later, long-standing stages of Prameha, when weight loss, fatigue and nerve-related discomfort may appear.

In Ayurvedic diabetes care

Warm, regular meals, a steady daily routine, oil massage (abhyanga) and adequate rest are traditional ways Ayurveda supports Vata balance.

Frequently asked questions

What calms Vata?

Ayurveda suggests warmth, regularity and nourishment: cooked meals at fixed times, warm oil massage, early sleep and calm routines.

Is tingling in the feet a Vata problem?

Ayurveda may relate it to Vata, but tingling or numbness can signal nerve changes linked with diabetes. Get it checked by your doctor promptly.
