Dosha

What is Pitta?

Also known as: Pitta dosha

Definition

Pitta is the Ayurvedic dosha of transformation, made of fire and water, that governs digestion, metabolism, body heat and sharpness of mind.

Pitta is described as hot, sharp, light and slightly oily. In balance it supports good digestion, focus and warmth; out of balance it is associated with acidity, irritability, inflammation and heat-related discomfort.

Six of the twenty classical types of Prameha are described as Pitta-related, and Pitta tends to rise in hot weather — one reason Ayurveda adapts diet with the seasons.

In Ayurvedic diabetes care

Cooling foods, avoiding excess spice and fried food, staying hydrated and not skipping meals are traditional Ayurvedic ways to keep Pitta balanced, especially in summer.

Frequently asked questions

What foods balance Pitta?

Ayurveda traditionally favours cooling, mildly sweet, bitter and astringent foods such as cucumber, leafy greens and coriander, and moderates very spicy, sour or fried food.

Why does summer matter for Pitta?

Ayurveda holds that external heat aggravates Pitta, so summer routines emphasise cooling food, hydration and avoiding the midday sun.
