Dosha

What is Kapha?

Also known as: Kapha dosha

Definition

Kapha is the Ayurvedic dosha of structure and stability, made of earth and water, that governs strength, lubrication and the body's tissues.

Kapha is described as heavy, slow, cool, oily and stable. In balance it gives strength, endurance and calm; out of balance it is associated with heaviness, sluggish digestion, weight gain and lethargy.

Classical texts describe ten of the twenty types of Prameha as Kapha-related, which is why Kapha balance is central to the Ayurvedic view of blood-sugar imbalance.

In Ayurvedic diabetes care

Ayurveda traditionally balances Kapha with lighter, warm, freshly cooked food, bitter and astringent tastes, daily movement and avoiding daytime sleep — always alongside the patient's prescribed care.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Kapha linked with blood-sugar imbalance?

Ayurveda describes accumulated Kapha, together with weak agni, as slowing metabolism. It is a traditional framework that points to everyday habits — diet, activity and sleep.

What reduces Kapha?

Traditionally: regular exercise, lighter meals, bitter vegetables such as karela, warming spices, waking early and avoiding heavy, sweet and oily food.
