Core concept

What is Prakriti?

Also known as: Constitution · Body type

Definition

Prakriti is a person's individual Ayurvedic constitution — the natural proportion of Vata, Pitta and Kapha they are born with.

Ayurveda holds that prakriti is set at conception and stays the same through life. It shapes body build, digestion, temperament and the kinds of imbalance a person is prone to.

Prakriti is different from vikriti, the current state of imbalance. Ayurvedic care looks at both: who you are by nature, and what has drifted out of balance now.

In Ayurvedic diabetes care

Knowing a patient's prakriti lets an Ayurvedic physician personalise diet, activity and routine rather than giving one plan to everyone. It is assessed through consultation, history and observation.

Frequently asked questions

Can my prakriti change?

In Ayurveda, prakriti is fixed for life; what changes is your current balance (vikriti), which diet, season, age and stress can affect.

How is prakriti assessed?

Through a physician's consultation: questions about your build, digestion, sleep and temperament, plus observation such as pulse assessment.
