What is Abhyanga?

Also known as: Ayurvedic oil massage

Definition

Abhyanga is the Ayurvedic practice of massaging the whole body with warm oil, traditionally done in the morning as part of the daily routine.

Classical texts describe abhyanga as nourishing the skin, calming Vata, easing stiffness and supporting good sleep. Sesame oil is the traditional choice, with coconut oil often used in hot weather.

It is usually done before a warm bath, with long strokes on the limbs and circular strokes on the joints.

In Ayurvedic diabetes care

Abhyanga is a calming self-care habit. People with diabetes should check their feet carefully, avoid very hot oil and ask their doctor first if they have reduced sensation, wounds or skin infections.

Frequently asked questions

Which oil is used for abhyanga?

Sesame oil is the classical choice; coconut oil is often preferred in summer or for people who feel warm. Herbal oils may be suggested by a physician.

Is abhyanga safe for people with diabetes?

It is generally a gentle practice, but take care with your feet, avoid hot oil and speak to your doctor first if you have neuropathy, wounds or skin problems.
