Core concept

What is Agni?

Also known as: Digestive fire · Jatharagni

Definition

Agni is the Ayurvedic concept of digestive and metabolic fire — the capacity to digest food and transform it into nourishment for the body's tissues.

Ayurveda describes many agnis, but the central one, jatharagni, governs digestion in the stomach and gut. When agni is balanced, food is digested well and the body is nourished; when it is weak or irregular, digestion is incomplete.

Weak agni is seen as a root of many imbalances, including those grouped under Prameha. This is why regular meal times, warm freshly cooked food and not eating before the previous meal is digested are recurring Ayurvedic advice.

In Ayurvedic diabetes care

Supporting steady agni — through meal timing, portion size, spices such as ginger and cumin, and mindful eating — is a core part of Ayurvedic lifestyle guidance for people managing blood sugar alongside their medical care.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my agni is weak?

Ayurveda associates weak agni with heaviness after meals, low appetite, bloating or a coated tongue. These signs are general; an Ayurvedic physician assesses them alongside your history.

Can spices strengthen agni?

Ayurveda traditionally uses warming spices such as ginger, cumin and black pepper in cooking to support digestion. Use them as food; check with your doctor before taking concentrated herbal products.
