Herb

What is Guduchi (Giloy)?

Also known as: Giloy · Amrita · Tinospora cordifolia

Definition

Guduchi, or giloy (Tinospora cordifolia), is a climbing vine whose stem is a prized Ayurvedic rasayana, traditionally used for immunity and metabolic balance.

Classical texts describe guduchi as balancing all three doshas, with a bitter and astringent taste. Its stem is used in decoctions, powders and tablets, and it appears in many classical formulations.

It is traditionally valued in Ayurveda for metabolic balance and appears in classical preparations used in Prameha care. It is also the herb Guduchi Ayurveda is named after.

In Ayurvedic diabetes care

Guduchi is used only as part of a physician-guided plan, in suitable form and amount for the individual, and always alongside — never instead of — prescribed treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Is guduchi the same as giloy?

Yes. Guduchi is the Sanskrit name and giloy the common Hindi name for Tinospora cordifolia.

Can I take giloy with my diabetes medicines?

Only with your doctor's knowledge. Herbs can interact with medicines, so your treating physician and Ayurvedic doctor should both know everything you take.
