Core concept

What is Ama?

Also known as: Undigested residue

Definition

Ama is the Ayurvedic term for the heavy, sticky residue believed to form when food is not fully digested because agni is weak.

In Ayurvedic thinking, ama clogs the body's channels (srotas) and disturbs the doshas. It is described as the opposite of healthy nourishment: heavy, dull and slow to clear.

Ayurveda links ama with sluggish metabolism and with the development of Prameha. Preventing it starts with digestion itself — eating at regular times, choosing lighter freshly cooked food and avoiding overeating.

In Ayurvedic diabetes care

Ayurvedic physicians often address ama first, through simple dietary adjustments and routine, before other steps. This is supportive lifestyle care and does not replace any prescribed treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Is ama the same as toxins?

It is often translated loosely as 'toxins', but in Ayurveda it specifically means the residue of incomplete digestion. It is a traditional concept rather than a measurable substance.

How does Ayurveda suggest reducing ama?

Mainly through gentle measures: lighter, warm meals, regular meal times, not snacking between meals and daily movement. Any detox or cleansing therapy should only be done under a qualified physician.
