What is Dinacharya?

Also known as: Ayurvedic daily routine

Definition

Dinacharya is the Ayurvedic daily routine: regular times for waking, meals, activity and sleep, meant to keep the body in step with natural rhythms.

Classical dinacharya includes waking early, cleaning the mouth and tongue, oil massage, exercise, bathing, meals at regular times with the main meal at midday, and sleeping early.

Ayurveda places great weight on consistency: the same habits at the same times are believed to support steady digestion and balanced doshas.

In Ayurvedic diabetes care

For people managing blood sugar, Ayurvedic physicians often start with dinacharya — regular meal timing, a post-meal walk and consistent sleep — because these habits support the medical care already in place.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most important part of dinacharya?

Regularity. Eating, sleeping and moving at consistent times is the foundation; the individual practices build on it.

Do I need to follow every step of dinacharya?

No. Start with one or two habits, such as fixed meal times and an early bedtime, and add more gradually.
