Core concept

What is Prameha?

Also known as: Prameha roga

Definition

Prameha is the Ayurvedic name for a group of twenty metabolic and urinary disorders; Madhumeha, the counterpart of diabetes, is one of them.

Classical texts group Prameha by dosha: ten types linked mainly to Kapha, six to Pitta and four to Vata. The common thread is disturbed metabolism of fluids and tissues, shown outwardly through changes in urine.

Prameha is described as a lifestyle-driven condition: heavy, sweet and oily food, too little movement and excess daytime sleep are named among its causes. That framing is why Ayurvedic care for it leans so heavily on diet and routine.

In Ayurvedic diabetes care

Understanding where a person sits within the Prameha spectrum helps an Ayurvedic physician tailor diet and lifestyle advice. It is a traditional framework, not a laboratory test, and it complements rather than replaces modern investigations.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Prameha and Madhumeha?

Prameha is the whole group of twenty related disorders; Madhumeha is one specific type within it, the one that most closely matches diabetes.

Is Prameha a modern diagnosis?

No. It is a classical Ayurvedic category. Modern diagnoses such as prediabetes or diabetes come from blood tests ordered by your doctor.
