What your score means
- Low risk (Under 30): Your score suggests a low risk of undiagnosed type-2 diabetes. Keep up an active routine and balanced meals, and follow your doctor's advice on routine check-ups.
- Moderate risk (30–50): Your score suggests a moderate risk. It is worth discussing with your doctor, who may suggest a blood test such as fasting glucose or HbA1c. Lifestyle habits — activity, meals, sleep — matter most at this stage.
- High risk (60 or more): Your score suggests a high risk of undiagnosed type-2 diabetes. Please see a doctor soon for a blood test such as fasting glucose or HbA1c. A screening score cannot diagnose diabetes — only a test can.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Indian Diabetes Risk Score (IDRS)?
IDRS is a simple screening score developed by the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation and published in 2005. It uses four questions — age, waist circumference, physical activity and family history — to estimate an Indian adult's risk of undiagnosed type-2 diabetes.
What is a high IDRS score?
A score of 60 or more is considered high risk, 30–50 moderate and under 30 low. A high score is a reason to get a blood test, not a diagnosis.
Can the IDRS tell me if I have diabetes?
No. It is a screening tool that flags who should be tested. Only blood tests such as fasting glucose or HbA1c, interpreted by a doctor, can diagnose diabetes.
Why does waist size matter more than weight?
Abdominal fat is closely linked with insulin resistance, and many Indian adults carry extra weight around the waist even at a normal body weight. That is why IDRS uses waist circumference.
