Frequently asked questions
What is HbA1c?
HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin) is a blood test that reflects your average blood sugar over roughly the past two to three months, reported as a percentage.
How do you convert HbA1c to average blood sugar?
The standard ADAG formula is: estimated average glucose (mg/dL) = 28.7 × HbA1c − 46.7. For example, an HbA1c of 7% corresponds to about 154 mg/dL.
What HbA1c is normal?
Labs usually report below 5.7% as normal, 5.7–6.4% as the prediabetes range and 6.5% or higher as the diabetes range. Your doctor confirms any diagnosis and sets your personal target.
Why doesn't my glucose meter average match the estimate?
The estimate is an average across many people, and meter readings depend on when you test. Anaemia and some other conditions can also affect HbA1c. Discuss any mismatch with your doctor.
